So, you’re considering buying leather furniture…

But not just any leather couch, sofa, area rug, bench, or loveseat. You want the cream of the crop – the absolute finest hide available, where supreme durability, quality, and elegance unite for unsurpassed longevity and comfort. But is that even possible? And if it is, how would you even know you’re getting the highest grade of leather furniture?

Not all leather is created equal, and there’s always the possibility of running across a few shiesters looking to sell you an inferior product. But the good news for you is that the world of leather actually has a grading system.

That’s right — a full-on, irrefutable grading system. This way, you always know the quality of the leather you’re investing in.

What’s ALL the Buzz about Leather Grades?

Leather quality hinges on various factors like treatment, price, and longevity. The best leather might cost a pretty penny but can outlast generations, becoming a cherished heirloom. As a result, most families pass these timeless treasures down from generation to generation.

What you consider the best leather material on the market depends greatly on your unique needs. Full-grain leather stands tall as the epitome of leather furniture, but let’s explore the full spectrum:

  1. Full-grain leather — This is the highest grade of leather available because it is chosen from the finest hides and consists of the entire hide with all the grain. Not some of the hide or part of the hide. ALL of the hide. As a result, it is extremely durable (resistant to dirt, spills, normal wear and tear, etc.) and will last longer because it is so thick. Full-grain leather also has noticeable marks, brands, and imperfections and typically develops a natural leather patina look and feel over time.
  2. Top-grain leather — Just like its name suggests, top-grain leather consists of only the top layer of the leather. It is less durable than full-grain leather, but it’s easier to work with and features a smooth finish and texture. Many leather furniture enthusiasts prefer top-grain leather because the tannery removes imperfections, and the rest of the product has more color and grain consistency.
  3. Split-grain leather—Skinny and flexible, split-grain leather is often referred to as suede or the bottom layer of the leather. It can look nice and comfortable but must be handled carefully to avoid exposure to moisture.
  4. Genuine leather — Once you reach this leather grade, you’re on the outside looking in when it comes to quality. That’s not to say genuine leather doesn’t work for many people, but it is a very thin and smooth leather that must be handled with extreme caution.
  5. Bonded leather — This leather is man-made, also known as faux leather. Bonded leather is known to have issues with cracking, breaking, and peeling over time. As a result, you’ll probably be replacing it several years from now.
